Kenneth Platt Obituary

Kenneth R. Platt, Sr., affectionately known as “Ken”, “Kenny”, and “Splinters”, 82, of Rutherford, passed away early Wednesday morning February 1, 2017, in the M.S. Hershey Medical Center. He was born in Rutherford on August 30, 1934, to the late William H. and Dora U. Ritter Platt. Ken was a wonderful husband and loving father. He retired from Carpenter’s Union Local 287, Harrisburg, having built many of the houses in Rutherford, a lot of the commercial buildings in the area, as well as the Hershey Medical Center. Ken was a life member of the Rutherford Reliance Hose Volunteer Fire Company where he served as Chief for 19 years; and a life member of the Dauphin County Fireman’s Association. He was also a social member of the VFW Post 1213 and AMVETS Post 280 both of Rutherford, and the Central Pennsylvania Rifle Club, Dauphin. Ken enjoyed hunting especially in Missouri, fishing, taking long drives, bowling, boating, fixing things, riding motorcycles, and drinking milkshakes. Most important to Ken, however, was spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty A. Fry Platt, whom he married on July 19, 1952; three sons, Kenneth Platt, Jr. husband of Deannea of Newport, John Platt husband of Barbara of Lebanon, and David Platt of Dauphin; three daughters, Sandra Platt of Hummelstown, Penny Heithold wife of Paul of Salem, MO, and Nancy Lake wife of Corey of Mechanicsburg; 13 grandchildren, Kenneth III, Daniel, Nicole, Mandy, Chad, Anna, Jacob, Emma, Luke, David Jr., Holly, Ian and Katie; 15 great grandchildren; and three sisters, Mary Neff wife of Nelson of Hershey, Edna Stahl of Grantville, and Pearl Platt of Harrisburg. In addition to his parents, Kenneth was preceded in death by a brother, William (Sonny) Platt, and two sisters, Beulah Popp and Grace Cobaugh. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 6, 2017, at 11 AM in the Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, with The Rev. Dr. Keith A. Blank of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church officiating. Interment will be in Hummelstown Cemetery. Viewing will be held in the funeral home on Monday from 10 AM until time of the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 112 Sipe Avenue, Hummelstown, Pa 17036, or to Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 165 North 67th Street, Harrisburg, PA 17111.
