Richard Fortney Obituary

Richard E. Fortney, Sr., 86, of Harrisburg, went home to be with Jesus Monday, October 31, 2016, surrounded by his loving family in his home. Born in York on June 18, 1930, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Cora E. Allison Fortney. Richard worked as a civil engineer for Modjeski & Masters for over 40 years, his main concentration in designing highways. He was a 1948 graduate of the former Highspire High School, and continued his education in the 1970’s at the University Center, Harrisburg. Richard was a registered licensed surveyor; he then received his degree and became a licensed professional engineer. He was a devout member of the Chambers Hill United Methodist Church. Richard was a member and past president of the Chambers Hill Lions Club, a former volunteer fireman for the Chambers Hill Fire Company; he was also a member of the Air National Guard for several years. He enjoyed carpentry, making everything from furniture to birdhouses to dollhouses. Richard loved to work in his yard and gardens, and enjoyed golfing. He and his wife, Jean, often watched Lawrence Welk together and played cards in a local club. A hard worker, Richard always made time for his family and lived to serve others; he constantly could be found doing odd jobs around his community. Richard was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 65 years, Jean E. Fox Fortney, on June 11, 2015; a brother, Edward Fortney; and sister, Alice Firestone. He is survived by his loving children, Lynn J. Cassel wife of Timothy of New Cumberland, Kathy J. Davis wife of Wayne of Indian Land, South Carolina, Cindy E. Yarnell wife of Paul “Butch” Yarnell Jr. of Harrisburg, Richard E. Fortney, Jr. husband of Betsy of Harrisburg, and Connie L. Fortney also of Harrisburg; a brother, George Fortney husband of Frances of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; eleven grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Friday, November 4, 2016, at 11:00 AM in the Chambers Hill United Methodist Church, 6300 Chambers Hill Road, Harrisburg, with The Rev. Nicholas E. Keeney, his pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Harrisburg. A viewing will be held in the church on Friday from 10 AM until time of the services. Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, is handling the arrangements.
