George Czar, 92, of Hillsdale, formerly of Clymer, died Monday, April 20, 2009, at his home at Live Well Estates.

A son of Michael and Sophie (Kuffchalk) Czar, he was born on July 29, 1916, in Gearheartsville, Pennsylvania, at home. He was baptized as a Roman Catholic.

George was married to his loving and caring wife, Anna Margaret (Legoskey) for 62 years, whom he wed on May 25, 1946 in Grassflat, Pennsylvania.

He was a corporal in the U.S. Army having served during World War II from 1941-1945. George received the American Defense Service medal and the European-African Middle Eastern Service medal with four Bronze Stars. Since the age of 19, he was a coal miner having worked at several mines in and around the area for 47 years. He retired in 1982 from Penn Hills Coal Company where he had worked for 16 years.

He was a member of the Heilwood American Legion Post 936. In his younger years, he served in the Hope Volunteer Fire Company in Philipsburg. While in good health, he loved to garden and fish. In addition to raising two children, George and Ann raised their two grandchildren, George B. and Tammy L.

He leaves behind his wife; his son, George A. Czar and girlfriend Stephanie Gray of Moscreek, PA; adopted daughter, Barbra Peace and boyfriend Randy Tressler of Meadville, PA; two sisters: Margaret Thompson and Betty Palagreeno and husband Anthony, all of Niagara Falls, New York; nine grandchildren: George B. Czar and girlfriend Kate Weilacher of Heilwood, PA; Tammy Wensel, who took care of George for the last 12 years, and her husband Ron of Clymer, PA; Lori Wilson of Leechburg, PA; Tracey Good of Clymer, PA; Trina Koches of Clymer, PA; Amanda “Gig” Czar of Dixonville, PA; George Lambing and wife Rhonda of Meadville, PA; Elizabth Lacey of Georgia and Jodi Lock of Meadville, PA; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter Mary; two brothers: Bill and John “Melton”; and two sisters: Sophie Rodgers and Mary Sleepy.

Friends will be received at the Bence Funeral Home in Clymer from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Church of the Resurrection—Clymer site with the Rev. Terry Hercik as celebrant. The Heilwood American Legion Post 936 will conduct military rites at the church. Interment will be private.
