Howard M. Sluga KANE Howard M. Sluga, 92, of Chapel Ridge, 200 St. Francis Dr., Bradford, and formerly of Kane, passed away Sunday (January 8, 2017) at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born August 7, 1924, in Mt. Jewett, he was a son the late Frank and Mary (Mohar) Sluga. On September 8, 1951, in Sheffield, he married Nellie R. Ulyon who survives. Howard graduated from Hazel Hurst High School in 1942 and was employed by the Commonwealth of PA for 37 years. He retired as the manager of the Bradford State Store in March of 1985. He had previously managed the Kane State Store for many years. He was a member of St. Callistus Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member and past president of P.A.R.S.E. and a former member of the Northwest Polka Boosters. Howard loved to polka and enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Surviving, in addition to his loving wife of 65 years, Nellie, are three daughters, Marlene (H. Paul) Lester of Sheffield, Stephanie Frederick of Bradford and Judy (Steve) Tucker of Johnstown; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, William (Dorothy) Sluga of Mt. Jewett; a sister, Norma Batista of Mt. Jewett; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death, besides his parents, by four sisters, Mary and Julia Sluga, Helen Romaine and Daisy Korbar; and four brothers, Charles, Frank, James and Edgar Sluga. Friends will be received Thursday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in the gathering space at St. Callistus Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at noon with the Rev. Philip Pinczewski, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Callistus Cemetery.
