Charles William “Smiley” Wilt, 87, of 974 W. Third St., Lock Haven, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013 at Haven Rehab & Skilled Nursing, Lock Haven.
He was born in Avis on February 27, 1926, the son of the late Harry D. and Laura B. Weaver Wilt.
In 1947 in Lock Haven, he married the former Helen Louise Wolfe, who passed in 2005.
In 2006 in Lock Haven, he married the former Patricia Bacon Williams, who survives.
He was a life member of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lock Haven.
Smiley was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the Light Cruiser USS Dubuque and obtaining the Pacific Theatre Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, the Victory Medal and Philipine Liberation Ribbon.
He was employed and retired from Hammermill Paper Company.
He was president of the Paper Makers Union for 12 years, a member of the Keystone Central School Board for 14 years serving as president for 7 years, an active member of the U-Act Support Group for the local 1787 Paper Workers Union and one of the founders of the Lock Haven Bobcat Booster Club.
In his time away from being active in the community, Smiley loved gardening and was an avid sports fan.
In addition to his wife, Patricia, he is survived by a son, Larry Thomas Wilt of Lock Haven; two daughters, Dawn Elaine (Robert) Ammerman of Lock Haven and Karen Louise (Jan) Wentz of Wisconsin; and four grandchildren, Kylie Ammerman, Dr. Meridith Drzakowski, Matthew Wentz and Christian Wentz.
In addition to his parents and wife, Helen, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rev. Kenneth E. Wilt; and two sisters, Gertrude E. Fyfe and Aldine C. Montgomery.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Clinton County SPCA or the United Evangelical Lutheran Church, Lock Haven.
