John Nicholas Pacella Obituary

Age 81, of McMurray, died peacefully, surrounded by his adoring family, on Monday, January 9, 2017. He was the son of Italian immigrants, Nicola and Rosina Pacella. John carried on work in his father's business as a master carpenter in the Pittsburgh area and built his family's two homes as well as numerous local homes. John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy; his sons, John Jude (Charissa) and David Michael (Jennifer); Pacella; and his daughter, Nicole DeFazio (Robert). All live in the Pittsburgh area. He is also survived by his beloved golden retriever, Lily. John "Poppi" enjoyed a close relationship with and had a great influence over his nine grandchildren: Zachary (20), Justin (15), Roberto (15), Nicholas (14), Dominic (11), Gabriel (10), Rose (9), Michaela (7), and Anthony (5). The last surviving member of his original family, John is now reunited in heaven with his parents; three brothers: Ralph, Pat, and Mike; two sisters, Teresa and Ange; two nieces, Lisa and Diane; and many relatives and friends. John served his country from 1953-1961 by enlisting in the Marines during the Korean War. Later, he was drafted into the Navy. His amazing toughness, perseverance, and resilience enabled him to serve his country with honor as well as recover from numerous COPD-related hospitalizations. An avid and gifted golfer who achieved a 5 handicap, John was very proud of the hole-in-one he made on the Robber's Row course on Port Royal Plantation on Hilton Head Island and his numerous sub-par rounds. He golfed regularly with his sons and nephews until his last year of life and attended the U.S. Open at Oakmont this year. The stories of his golf course shenanigans have survived for decades and become family legend. Known for his love of practical jokes and sense of humor, John will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by those fortunate enough to have known and loved him.
