Joan Woodring

Joan L. "JoAnn" (Johnson) Woodring, 83, of Julian, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2016 at home. Born July 21, 1933 in Williamstown, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Carl R. Johnson and Lillian (Hartline) Johnson. She was married on October 18, 1953 to William D. Woodring who preceded her in death in 2012. Joan graduated from Williamstown High School in 1951 as valedictorian of her class, and she won a full academic scholarship to Marietta College, Ohio, where she studied biology from 1951-1953. Joan was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority. She met her husband, Bill, at a meeting of the TriBeta Honor Society. Joan worked as a floral designer at Woodring's Floral Gardens and later as a Housing Supervisor at Penn State University. After retiring in 1994, Joan worked alongside her husband selling flowers and perennials at the State College Farmers Market. Joan was an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Bellefonte, Pa. and she was a volunteer for the Bellefonte Community Lunch Program. Among Joan's personal papers was her handwritten note; May I live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, and leave the rest to the Lord God. Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. She is survived by two sons John (Carol) Woodring and Timothy Woodring of Julian and by two daughters, Susan (Neil) Haagen and Carlyn (Durland) Shumway of Bellefonte. She is survived by her siblings Larry Johnson, Lancaster, PA, Richard Johnson, Las Cruces, NM and MaryEllen Brookover, Colville, WA. Joan is also survived by her ten grandchildren; Steven, Brian, James and Jeremy Woodring; Heather Schweizer; Bryson, Dale and Katie Haagen; and Callie and Annie Shumway; and by two great grandchildren Evan and Nathan Schweizer. She was preceded in death by two sons, David in 1977 and Bill along with wife Lori and their children Lucy and Luke in 1995; one great grandson Aiden Schweizer in 2009 and brother Carl Johnson, Jr. in 2015. Family and friends will be received at the Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, Milesburg on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from 6 PM until 8 PM. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the St. John Lutheran Church, 216 N. McAllister St., Bellefonte with Rev. William E. Osman officiating. Burial will be in the New Union Cemetery, Union Twp., Centre Co., Pa. Arrangements are under the direction of the Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, 201 Spring Street, Milesburg, Pa.
