Philip Sampsel Obituary

Philip A. Sampsel, 87, of Milesburg passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016, at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Phil was born on September 3, 1929, in Boalsburg, a son of the late Harold and Martha Hassinger Sampsel. On September 15, 1950, he married the former Marjorie L. "Midge" Fetzer who survives at home. Also surviving are his sons, Jeffrey L. (Kaye) Sampsel of Dover, DE, Stephen A. Sampsel of Coleville, and his daughter Jennifer L. Kellerman of Bellefonte; his four grandchildren, Bryan L. Sampsel, Andrew Kellerman, Sara Kellerman, step-granddaughter, Heather, and his five great-grandchildren. Phil is also survived by his five sisters, Gladys Sampsel of Centre Hall, Marjorie Lowery of Zion, Norma McKenney of Woolrich, Helen Frazier, of Bellefonte, Edith Sodergren of Bellefonte, and his four brothers, Miles Sampsel of Erie, Paul Sampsel of Tusseyville, David Sampsel of Spring Mills, and Scott Sampsel of Bellefonte. Phil had served as a storekeeper, serviceman-installer, and lineman before being appointed as operating technician in 1972 for West Penn Power Company, he was senior operating technician on the West Penn Power Co. Nittany division staff at State College. Phil was a member of Milesburg United Methodist Church where he was very active, he was active in his community and Masonic groups, he was a youth director, former trustee and church superintendent for Milesburg United Methodist Church. Phil had served on the finance committee and was past president of Bellefonte and Vicinity Council of Churches. Among his several Masonic affiliations, he was director and past president of Mt. Nittany Consistory Club. Phil also was past Milesburg Borough auditor, former Boy Scout troop committee chairman, and a Bellefonte YMCA board member. Phil was also a charter member of the Milesburg Lions Club. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his step-mother Mary Gates, his brothers James Sampsel and William Sampsel. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, January 1, 2017, at The Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, 201 Spring St., Milesburg, with Rev. Carl E. Hill officiating. Family and friends will be received from 1:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M. with services at 3:00 P.M. Burial will be in Eagle Cemetery, Boggs Twp., Centre Co. Memorial contributions may be made to the Milesburg United Methodist Church for local missions, P.O. Box 535, Milesburg, PA 16853 in memory of Philip A. Sampsel. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of The Dean K. Wetzler Funeral Home, 201 Spring St., Milesburg.
