Frank Furman Obituary

Frank W. Furman, Jr., 69, of East Avenue, Westerly, passed away at his home on Sunday, November 27, 2016. He was born in 1947, the son of the late Frank W. Furman, Sr., and the late Marguerite Furman. He is survived by his wife Sharon (Johnson) Furman of Westerly; two sons, Wyatt Furman of Westerly and Austin Furman, and his wife Michelle, of Odenton, Maryland; one daughter, Lindsay Scariati, and her husband James, of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Jonah, Lydia, and Lilah Scariati, and Nathan Furman; and a brother, Harry Furman, of North Fort Myers, Florida. Mr. Furman attended Immaculate Conception school going on to graduate from Westerly High School in 1965, where he played football. He later proudly served in the US Army from 1967-69, receiving the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Later, he attended the University of RI, focusing his studies on industrial social work. In 2001 he retired from Pfizer, where he worked as a chemical operator. His grandchildren, who called him “Grandfather,” were the joy of his life, and he had special names for each one of them. Mr. Furman enjoyed gardening, every fall providing a “pumpkin from Grandfather’s garden” for his grandchildren, and he made sure that the birds and the squirrels were well fed, daily filling the birdfeeder in his yard. He was also a fan of NASCAR racing, and football, especially the Oakland Raiders. He was an avid reader and was never without a book at hand. He loved his wire-haired fox terrier, Missy, who will miss him greatly, and he had a special place in his heart for his late Corgi, Delilah. A visiting hour will be held at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce Street, Westerly on Friday, December 2, from 9-10am, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial that will be celebrated at 10:30am at St. Pius X Church, 44 Elm Street, Westerly.
