Theodore “Ted” Balbat, beloved husband for over 59 years of Katherine (Currie) Balbat, of Vars Lane, Bradford, passed away at The Westerly Hospital on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at the age of 85. Born in New York City, NY, he was the son of the late Boris and Hilma Balbat. In his younger years, Ted was a Coney Island Lifeguard who spent his days off walking the length of Coney Island with his friends. A graduate of Queens City College and New England Tech, he also served in the US Army during the Korean War. Ted was later employed for 39 years as an Electrical Test Specialist for Electric Boat in Groton until his retirement. He was a big fan of Pipe Organ music and an avid movie buff. In addition, Ted was an accomplished rare flower cultivator. He leaves behind his wife Katherine; and five children, Elaine Gryguc of N. Providence, Dianne Balbat and her wife April Peavey of Hollis, NH, David Balbat and his wife Diane of Waterford, Edward Balbat and his wife Danielle of Bradford, and Richard Balbat and his wife Michelle of Tyngsboro, MA. Mr. Balbat will also be dearly missed by his nine grandchildren, Cheryl, Peter, Paul, Alicia, Addison, Helena, Jillian, Oliver and Elizabeth as well as step granddaughters, Abigail and Alexandra. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2-4pm at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly. Relatives and friends are also invited to attend a Funeral Service in the funeral home on Monday at 11am. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.
