Barbara Hammons Means

Barbara (Cooper) Hammons Means passed away peacefully at her home on February 11, 2017, after an extended illness. She was born on May 21, 1937, in Jackson County, Tennessee, to the late George William Virgil Cooper and Lillie Jane Gentry Cooper. Mrs. Means was a member of First Baptist Church of Cookeville, Tennessee. She was a homemaker and pastor’s wife, and she worked for several years at Teledyne-Stillman. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mrs. Means loved the Lord and enjoyed watching gospel videos and listening to gospel music. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Eugene Means; 2 daughters & sons-in-law, Melinda & Terry Norris of Auburn Hills, Michigan, and Lisa & Mark Maxwell of Cookeville, Tennessee; one stepdaughter & son-in-law, Michelle & Nickey Giordano of Decatur, Alabama; one sister, Jean Ballard of Roseville, Michigan; 11 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews. Mrs. Means was preceded in death by her first husband, the Reverend James Hammons; her son, Tim Hammons; her stepson, Eugene Means, Jr.; two grandsons, Corporal Tyler Burnette, USMC, and Joseph Norris; her brother, Elvis Cooper; and two sisters, Ethleen Cooper and Stella Garrison. Pall Bearers will be James David Hammons, Josh Anderson, Johnny Adams, Chuck Adams, Kenneth Bean, and Keith Bean. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of Avalon Hospice of Cookeville and to caregivers, Melissa Phillips, Elsie Layne, Laurie Matthews, Karen Wiley, and Tracy Bandy. Funeral services for Mrs. Means will be held Monday, February 13, 2017, beginning at 3:30 pm from the chapel of Crest Lawn Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, February 12, from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm, and again on Monday from 11:00 am until time of service at 3:30 pm.
