Betty Schwensen Obituary

Betty Joyce Schwensen (née Stewart) was born on April 17, 1931 in Levelland, Texas, the fourth of five children of Ernest and Lois Stewart. She had sparkling blue eyes and beautiful red hair which earned her the nickname of “Rusty” while attending Hardin Simmons University. After three years of college Betty married John Schwensen and the couple moved to Fort Worth, where Betty completed her Bachelor’s Degree in education at Texas Christian University. She began her teaching career in Fort Worth while John attended Southwestern Theological Seminary. Betty and John had four children, Jonna Dee, Joyce Ann, Amanda Lee, and Stewart Evans. She extended her love completely to her children’s spouses, Randall Young, Lucia Regan, James Sobczak, and Tammy Gough. Betty was a wonderfully loving and devoted grandmother, known as “Ernie” to her grandchildren, Tyler Young and his wife Lori Ann, Carrie Young, Justin and Ryan Sobczak, and Jeanette and Betty Schwensen, and to her great-granddaughter, Sallie Harper Young. She was looking forward to meeting her great-grandson who is arriving in April. “Ernie” was quite simply the greatest mother and grandmother that ever lived. After being a stay at home mom for 15 years Betty returned to teaching, while completing her Master’s Degree at Texas Women’s University. For thirty years she was a beloved and devoted teacher of special education students in the Dallas and Fort Worth public school districts. After retiring from teaching Betty spent eight years as the primary caregiver for John after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. John passed away in 2000 at age 70 with Betty and their four children at his side. Betty made lifelong friends in each of the cities and towns that she lived in, including Parsons and Dodge City, Kansas, and Lubbock, Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, and Weatherford, Texas. In addition to her children and grandchildren, Betty is survived by her sisters, Evelyn Looney, Helen Johnson, and Bonnie Becton, by her brother-in-law, James Becton, and by her beloved nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband John, her parents Ernest and Lois Stewart, her brother, Ernest Stewart, Jr., and her devoted son-in-law Randall Young. Words cannot do justice to Betty’s wonderful legacy, but we will always remember her unconditional love for her family and her students, her generous heart, and her wicked sense of humor. We are sure that she has already made countless friends in heaven, and is now standing at the pearly gates graciously welcoming all the newcomers as they arrive. Remembrances suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Diabetes Association. Wade Family Funeral Home (817) 274-9233
