Audrey Jones Johnson Obituary

Sister Audrey Jones Johnson entered this world on September 16, 1932 in Brooklyn, New York. She is the beloved first born of six children to Deacon Rudolph Jones and Deaconess Rose Alice Jones of Hampton, Virginia. Audrey was raised in Hampton and attended Union School, as well as Elizabeth City Normal School, located on the campus of Hampton University. She worked as a secretary and accounting clerk for twenty-five years at the Garden City Scrap Iron and Metal Company, which was owned by her family. Audrey later attended Gloria Day Lutheran School in Hampton and dedicated herself to taking care of each of her parents until their passing.

Audrey was a loving daughter, sister, and devoted mother to Edward B. Moore, Jr., Althea Patrice Moore Pittman, and Theresa Moore, who passed during infancy. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Rudolph Jones, Jr. and Abraham Jones, Sr. and a grandson, Edward Bernard Moore, III. She is survived by three sisters, Arnetta Jones Thompson of Hampton, VA, Halcyon Rosita Jones of Hampton, VA, and Roberta Christine Jones Covington of Smithfield, VA; a treasured brother-in-law and dear friend, George Covington of Smithfield, VA; one grandson, Michael Lamonte Moore; two granddaughters, Darlene Cooper (Eric) and Crystal Renee Moore Butler (Perry); two special grand-godchildren, Jazmine Collins and Carnell Williams; four great grandchildren, Christie, Savion, Sinaya, and Derek; one great, great grandchild, Ashton; countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.

From childhood through adulthood, Audrey attended the Gospel Spreading Church in Hampton, Virginia, where she was a member of the “Blue Birds” Youth Choir. Later in life she relocated to the Eastern Shore of Virginia to reside with her daughter, Althea and joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Boston, where she was a faithful attendee of the Sunday school and a member of the Senior Choir. Audrey’s favorite scripture was John 3:16, which reflected her belief that God’s love for us is shown in his sacrificing of his only son, and thus our love for God and for others is also shown through our actions. Audrey’s entire life was indeed an embodiment of this belief which was evident in her constant self-sacrificing and through her concern for others more than for herself. She was known as a faithful friend to many and she was known as “Mom” to many, many more.
