Dexter Harris

Mr. Dexter E. Harris, age 89, of the Council Mountain Road section of Rowe, Virginia, passed away Saturday (November 26, 2016) in a Bristol, Tennessee hospital. Born May 31, 1927 in Buchanan County, Virginia, he was a son of the late James “Jim” Harvey and Emma Catherine Barton Harris. A lifelong resident of the area, he was of the Freewill Baptist faith. A retired coal miner, he had formerly been employed by Island Creek Coal Company and was a member of the UMWA Local 1374. He enjoyed fishing and deer hunting, but most of all spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie McGlothlin Harris, and siblings, Troy Harris, Ruby Harris, Mary Bell Terrell, and Taze Harris. Survivors include two daughters, Yuvonne Tiller and husband, James of Bee and Lucy Jackson and husband, Paul of Mavisdale; two sons, Garrett Harris and wife, Sue, and Alvin Harris all of Rowe; three grandchildren, Pam Ball and husband, Greg, Craig Tiller, and Chris Jackson; two great-grandchildren, Makayla Ball and Hannah Ball; two brothers, Robert Harris and wife, Rachel of Frazeyburg, Ohio, and Gus Harris of Cedar Bluff; five sisters, Bertha Neece of Granville, Ohio, Lucy Morrow of Columbus, Ohio, Maxie Downing of Kingsport, Tennessee, Viola Owens of Pataskala, Ohio, and Shirley O’Quinn of Honaker; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. James Tiller and Rev. Troy Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the Harris Cemetery near the home. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Monday, where an evening service will be conducted at 7:00 PM with Rev. Jeff Ball officiating.
