Mrs. Dollie Hess Austin, age 84, of Venia, Virginia went to her eternal rest on Saturday (January 21, 2017) at her home. Born June 21, 1932 in Buchanan County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Elisha and Venia Harris Hess. A lifelong resident of the Grissom Creek section of Buchanan County, she was a member of Austin’s Chapel Independent Methodist Church at Venia, Virginia. She served as postmaster of the local post office and operated the country store as well. She loved to quilt, enjoyed working word search books, tending to her flowers and cooking to feed anyone that came to visit. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Don Keen; her second husband, Curtis Austin; one son, Kermit Keen; son-in-law, E.B. Tiller; five brothers, Howard Hess, Arthur Hess, Earl Hess, Jonah Hess and Ralph Hess and two sisters, Edith James and Hazel Combs; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roland and Belle Helton Austin and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Survivors include three daughters, Shelia Owens of Grissom Creek, Virginia, Elaine Tiller of Tiller Town, Virginia and Bea Hale and husband, Bob of Rural Retreat, Virginia; special daughter-in-law, Joyce Keen of Honaker, Virginia; four grandchildren, Cathy Ray and husband, Nelson, Candy Meyer, Eric Owens and wife, Wendy and Cody Owens and wife, Hope; seven great-grandsons, Zachery Ray and wife, Melissa, Blake Ray, Tyln Owens, Cainen Owens, Gunnar Meyer, Gage Meyer and Gannon Meyer and one great-granddaughter, Tayla Owens; two great-great-grandchildren, Kiley Ray and Zoey Ray; sisters, Ruth Hughes of Johnson City, Tennessee and Mint McGlothlin and husband, Davis of Venia, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Lucille Austin; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends also survive. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff of Helping Hands, David Miller and Stephanie Ball. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bennie Harris and Rev. Guy Harris officiating. Interment will follow in the Austin Cemetery at Venia, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Eric Owens, Cody Owens, Zachary Ray, Blake Ray, Nelson Ray, Calvin Hess and Gregory Austin. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Austin, Tyln Owens, Tayla Owens, Cainen Owens, Gunnar Meyer, Gage Meyer, Gannon Meyer, Kiley Ray, Zoey Ray, Delmer Hess and Roger Combs. The family will receive friends after 5 PM Monday at the Honaker Funeral Home where a song service will be conducted at 7 PM.
