Jessie Vance Obituary

Mr. Jessie Lee Vance, age 85, of Rosedale, Virginia, passed away Tuesday (November 29, 2016) at his home following a lengthy illness. Born March 29, 1931 in Swords Creek, Virginia, he was a son of the late Silas and Mary Bell Whitt Vance. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Marine Corps. A proud member of the UMWA Local 7327, he had formerly been employed as an electrician with Pittston Coal Company at Jewell Valley. He was an avid fisherman, woodworker, and gardener, and in his later years, loved making picture frames, clocks, and tables with “Bob”. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of fifty years, Dorothy Jean Boyd Vance, two brothers, Winfred and Clinton Vance, four sisters, Eula Jackson, Dora Barnes, Edith Compton, and Pauline Frye, two half-brothers, and four half-sisters. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors include his wife, Norma Meadows Vance of the home; one daughter, Pamela Gale Rasnake and husband, Darrell of Rosedale; three step-sons, Ricky Artrip, Sr., Michael Artrip and wife, Michelle of Honaker, and Randall Scott Artrip of Abingdon; two step-granddaughters, Kala Artrip and Heather Street; three step-grandsons, Ricky Dale Artrip, Jr., Blake Artrip, and Jeremy Artrip; five step-great-grandchildren, and one special step-grandchild, Autumn Sky Artrip, whom he affectionately called, “Bob”; three special nieces, Patty Elkins, Nina Fields, and Sue Palmer; special nephew, Jimmy Vance; many additional nieces and nephews also survive. The family would like to express a very special thank you to the 4th floor nursing staff at Clinch Valley Medical Center, Legacy Hospice, Chris Cordle, and the 2016 graduating nurses from Southwest Virginia Community College. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Re. Eugene Elkins officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 9864 of Lebanon, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Mike Artrip, Jeremy Artrip, Blake Artrip, Scott Artrip, Chris Dye, and Lonnie Blackwell. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Dye, Bill Watson, Danny Dye, John Stiltner, and Lee James. The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Thursday.
