Mrs. Leona Whited Shope, age 93, of Rosedale, Virginia, passed away Sunday (October 30, 2016) in an Abingdon, Virginia hospital. Born March 3, 1923 in Russell County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Jennie Keen Whited. She had spent her early life in Swords Creek, Virginia, moving to Narrows, Virginia where she made her home prior to moving back to Rosedale, Virginia fourteen years ago. She was of the Freewill Baptist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Shope, and eight siblings, Carlos Whited, Lydia Hess, Eugene Whited, Earl Whited, Martha Lively, Ferrell Whited, Harold Whited, and Corene Perkins. Survivors include one daughter, Gerry Novean and husband, Bob of Arcadia, Florida; two sons, Roy Lee Hess and wife, Connie, and Teddy Hess and wife, Ellen of Florida; two sisters, Goldie Hess of Swords Creek and Arlene Compton of Honaker; one brother, Mason Whited of Swords Creek, Virginia; ten grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Larry Burton officiating. Interment will follow in the Hess Cemetery at Swords Creek, Virginia. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home after 6:00 PM Wednesday.
