Darrell J. McCowan, 75, of Abingdon, Va., was called to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 29th, 2016. Born on July 16, 1941, in Nora, Dickenson County, VA; he was a native of Russell County, and lived his last years in Abingdon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and daughter as follows: Walter J. McCowan & Beulah Vest McCowan; six sisters: Ethel, Glenda, Carolyn, Mildred, Mabel, and Edith; four brothers: Bobby Jean, Clyde, Earl, & John; and daughter, Regina McCowan Williams.

He was a Union Coal Miner for the Clinchfield-Pittston Corporation for over 30 years, and a member of the United Mine Workers Association of the 28th District. He was a God-fearing man who trusted his Savior Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his daughter, Sherrie D. Phillips, of Abingdon; three grandchildren, Isiah and Amaris Phillips of Abingdon and Chantel Williams of Lakeview, NY; three great-grandchildren, Charity Faith and Jasmine Navaeh of Lakeview, NY; and Graceyn Claire Phillips of Abingdon; one sister, Brenda Rose of Abingdon; one sister-in-law, Agnes McCowan of Nora, VA; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, 2016, in the Owens Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Jack Meade officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Abingdon.

The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, at the funeral home prior to the service.
