It is with great sadness that the family of Hilda Virginia Nelson Baker, 93, of Winchester, VA announces her passing on Friday, December 30, 2016 at her residence. She was born on March 13, 1923 in Winchester; the oldest daughter of three siblings of the late Edgar and Elsie Nelson. Hilda lived her entire life in Winchester. As a young adult she spent most of her summers working in Kennebunkport, ME. She also worked at the House of Cards in Winchester. She enjoyed making her own clothes and knitting. When she met Halford “Red” Baker she knew he was the one! They were married on March 20, 1946 and spent sixty wonderful years together until his passing in 2006. They spent many family vacations in Kennebunkport where they established lifelong friends. Hilda moved to Spring Arbor in 2012. She was very happy there and was loved by all. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and aunt. Surviving her are son, David Baker of Baltimore, MD; daughter, Beth Lanier of Hanhan, SC; grandchildren, Christopher Baker, Lisa Baker and Kimberly White of Baltimore and Marion Godwin of Guyton, GA; two great granddaughters; brother, Roland; sister in law, Hilda Nelson; three nieces and one nephew. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, January 5, 2016 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2016 at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Dan McCoig officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Harris, Daniel Lewis, Bret Butler and Jerry Sirbaugh. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Winchester, VA.
