Eugene “Gene” Laszewski age 88, of Stevens Point passed away Monday evening February 27, 2017 at St. Clare's Hospital in Weston. A Mass of Christian Burial for Gene will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday March 4, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. Jerzy Rebacz will officiate. Friends and relatives will gather to share memories from 9:00 Saturday morning until the time of services at the church. Burial with full military honors will be in the parish cemetery. Memorials in lieu of flowers will be established for the Stevens Point Library, St Joseph Church, and the WI Endangered Resources Fund. Shuda Funeral service is assisting the family. Gene was born July 6, 1928 in Stevens Point, the son of Felix and Clara (Repinski) Laszewski. He graduated from P. J. Jacobs High School in 1947. He entered the United States Army and served his country in the Korean War as a PFC. He earned the Korean War Medal, United Nation Service Medal, and the 45 pistol sharp shooters medal, while serving in the Army 720th with the Military Police. He returned to the area after his honorable discharge and married Harriet Kostuch on April 30, 1955 at St. Peters Catholic Church. The couple settled in Stevens Point and raised their family. Gene had a 34 year career with the Soo Line Railroad and retired as a switchman in 1987. He enjoyed fishing – especially on McDill Pond, bowling, coin collecting, bird watching and feeding, and was an avid Wisconsin Badger, Green Bay Packer, all basketball, and local sports fan. Gene is survived by his 3 children: Dr. Barbara (Carlos) Williams, Seattle; Lynn Laszewski (Tim Carey), Oak Park, IL; Tom Laszewski, Hampton, NH. His companion; Gerry Zelhofer, Stevens Point. 5 grandchildren: Mark, Catherine, Kyle, Slade, and Logan. 1 great grandson: Kaiden. His sister Alice Krumrei, Stevens Point and his half-sister: Pat Bannach, Stevens Point. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Harriet in 1996, 2 brothers: Len and Don, and his half-brother Mickey. Online condolences may be sent by visiting www.shudafuneral.com
