Charles Lavern Glasser, Sr.

Our loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Charles Lavern "Bud' Glasser, Sr. has left us to be with our Lord at 7:25 a.m., on Thursday, August 23, 2007, at the V. A. Nursing Home in Marion, Illinois. Charles was born on May 4, 1920 at home in Murphysboro to Charles Harry Glasser and Fleda Beatrice (Clough) Glasser. He married our lovely mother, Juanita Elizabeth Kummer in Piggott, Arkansas, on May 13, 1950. He leaves behind four sons and three daughters-- Charles Lavern "Chuck" Glasser, Jr. and his wife Diane Glasser of Murphysboro, Howard Glasser of Carbondale, Joseph Glasser of Galveston, TX, David Glasser and his partner Tonya Gregory of Murphysboro, Fleda E. McCoy and Dennis McCoy of Murphysboro, Kay Herring and her husband Paul Herring of Murphysboro, and Mary Burk and her husband Don Burk of Murphysboro. He was known as "Grandpa Glasser" to eighteen grandchildren Josh Glasser of Costa Mesa, CA, Kim Glasser and Kristina Glasser of Murphysboro, Erik Glasser of Marion, Aaron Perrigan of Murphysboro, Freddie Ray Glasser of Marion, Dylan Glasser of Carterville, Eliza Manning of Jacksonville, FL, Andrew Lynn of Terre Haute, IN, Jodi Glasser of Baton Rouge, LA, Ashley Richardson of Fayetteville, NC, Michael McCoy of Pontiac, IL, Matthew McCoy of Cowden, IL, Marc McCoy and Mandi McCoy of Murphysboro, Sara Cano of Tenn. Donovan Burk and Dawson Burk of Murphysboro; "Great-Grandpa" to twenty four great grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by many other extended family members and friends. Charles began his career with six years in the U.S. Navy and seventeen months with the U.S. Navy Reserves. He proudly served in the World War II and Korean War with additional travel to many other foreign locations. Upon his return to Southern Illinois, he was a correctional officer at Menard Penitentiary and later pursued a successful career as a professional photographer, owning his own home studio in Murphysboro from 1967 to 1990. Many will remember him as the recorder of their special memories, weddings, and school photographs. Dad was especially proud of the friendships he made and the people he met during his time as a photographer. We knew our father to be a "Jack of all trades", who loved to further his knowledge by reading many self help manuals and home repair books. Nothing was "unfixable" in Dad's book. His hobbies included gardening, cooking, canning, electronics, ham radio, short-wave radio and telling his war stories to anyone who inquired and had a minute to listen. Charles and Juanita ruled the roost and raised nine children with a firm hand and strong family values. Whether it be our signature "Glasser blue eyes", strong willed stubbornness, or shared loved for our family, we will all carry a special part of our father in our hearts and memories. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Kathleen "Kay" Ripley, his infant brother Charles Edward Glasser, two sons, Jack Edward Glasser and William Lester "Bill" Glasser.
