Grant Kafarowski Richmond Hill, Ontario Obituary

Grant Kafarowski

KAFAROWSKI, Grant - Peacefully at home in Richmond Hill with his family at his side on Monday, May 8, 2006. Beloved husband of Pamela. Dear father of Theresa and Carl of Richmond Hill and Joanna of British Columbia; father-in-law of Duncan and Elida. Adored granddad of Hannele, Eli, Michael and Emma. Loved brother of Teresa and Alicja of Poland. After emigrating from Poland to England in his early twenties, Grant undertook engineering studies at Imperial College London while also learning English and working a night-job. He graduated with a first-class degree in Civil Engineering and a medal in Maths. He often fondly recalled his professors at Imperial College as having a profound effect on him, instilling a love of learning and a curiosity about the world that continued throughout his life. He later moved with his young family to Canada to take up an engineering position. In the early 1960's, Grant and a partner founded a precast concrete company in Concord that became one of the most highly respected in the industry and that still endures today. Many of the buildings in which his company was involved are to be found in London, England, New York, Glasgow, Boston, Washington, Chicago as well as Toronto. Grant worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for his employees within the company and many of them worked with him for several decades. Grant was a talented pianist attaining a Grade 10 in music later in life. Music, swimming, playing chess, gardening and walking his grand-dogs were among his pleasures. Grant was a man of integrity, generosity and strong principles providing a positive role model for all who had the privilege to know him. He will be deeply missed but the lessons he taught and the love and support he gave selflessly to others will never be forgotten. He guided us well. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church, 10295 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill on Friday, May 12, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Dr. K. Siminovich in care of Mount Sinai Hospital, 600 University Avenue, Rm. 656A, Toronto, M5G 1X5, would be appreciated.
