James Melvin Abner, 81, of Bluegrass Homes, passed away Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Melba Rae King Abner.
James was born on July 22, 1929 in Sand Gap, Kentucky, and was the son of Nimrod and Mary Jane Johnson Abner, both of whom preceded him in death. He was retired from the auto body shop business, and was of the Nazarene faith. He loved his special little dog, Dottie, and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, Melba Rae, James is survived by: four sons, Danny Abner (Barbara), of Berea, Ricky Abner (Jill), of Richmond, James Abner Jr., of Richmond, and Robert Abner (Sherry), of Berea; one daughter, Cathy Lynn Powell (Larry), of Berea; thirteen grandchildren, James Powell, Larry Powell, Viletha Logsdon, Clinton Abner, Carissa Cummins, Kaylynn Blanton, Joshua Abner, Houston Abner, Savannah Abner, Cody Abner, Chelsea Abner, Josh Holdorff, and Amanda Steele; eleven great-grandchildren, Allyson Powell, Justus Powell, Calleigh Powell, Aiden Logsdon, Elijah Logsdon, Lily Logsdon, Madison Cummins, Canon Cummins, Kyra Blanton, Haley Blanton, and Jaylin Blanton; four sisters, Virginia Meeks, of Nicholasville, Dorothy Abney, of Richmond, Jean Roberts (Kenny), of Franklin, Tennessee, and Dorene Tuttle of Nicholasville; and two very special nephews, Wayne Gipson (Sylvia) and J.J. Gipson (Jo).
Mr. Abner was preceded in death by four brothers, Carlos, Herman, Junior, and Oscar Abner, and two sisters, Ruby Gipson and Bertie Chaney.
Funeral services for James Melvin Abner will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Blanton and Kerry Cummins officiating. Burial will follow at Madison County Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be James Powell, Larry Powell Jr., Clinton Abner, Josh Abner, Houston Abner, Cody Abner, Josh Holdorff, and Justus Powell.
Visitation will be from 5:00- 9:00 p.m. on Friday, August 13, 2010 at Oldham, Roberts & Powell.
