Obituary for John G. Engstrom

John G. Engstrom, 88, of Alpha, Illinois died Sunday September 20, 2009 at OSF St. Francis in Peoria. Services are 10:30 AM Thursday at the Grace Lutheran Church in Ophiem, IL. Burial is in Alpha Cemetery where Graveside Military Services will be conducted. Visitation is from 4 " 7 PM Wednesday at Peterson Wallin Knox Funeral Home in Alpha where memorials may be left to Grace Lutheran Church, Oxford American Legion Post 1197 or Tri-County Ambulance Service. Online condolences can be made at www.petersonwallinknox.com He was born August 16, 1921 in Floyd Twsp, Warren County, IL a son of John and Alice Schubar Engstrom. John graduated from Galva High School in 1940 and married Polly Craig February 8, 1945 in Galesburg, IL. He was a U.S. WW 2 Veteran serving with the 633rd tank destroyers in the 3rd Army. John farmed in the New Windsor and Ophiem area for 37 years and was employed as a Custodian and Bus Driver for the AlWood School District. For many years he was an assistant for Peterson Wallin Knox Funeral Homes in Alpha and Woodhull and also Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo. His memberships include Grace Lutheran Church in Ophiem and the Oxford American Legion Post # 1197 Survivors include his wife, Polly; 1 son, Ron (Cindy) Engstrom of Athens, Il.; 2 daughters, Jeanine (Jim) McGaughy of Orion, Il; Kimberly Engstrom and special Friend Jeffrey McDowell of Bloomington, Il.; 4 grandchildren Bruce (Rita) McGaughy of Fremont, Ca.; Michelle (GW) Fuhr of Bloomington, Il.; Jenny (Kurt) Behrent of Pawnee, IL.; Diana Engstrom of Chicago, Il.; 10 great grandchildren; 1 sister-in-law Betty Burch of McMinnville, TN.; and several nieces and nephews. His parents, brothers, Lewis and Bob, sisters, Erma Peterson and Blanch Oakman and a grandson Todd Engstrom preceded him in death.
