Obituary for Godfrey Stejskal

Godfrey "Bud” Stejskal, 96, of ManorCare, died Sunday, March 2, 2003, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, of complications following hip surgery. Services: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Will Jackson. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the funeral home. Private Family Burial: Czech National Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include a son, Gary Stejskal and wife Glenda Hutton Stejskal of Cedar Rapids, a daughter-in-law, Britt-Marie Stejskal of Alexandria, Virginia; three grandchildren, Maria Stejskal Kaneer, Grant Stejskal and Kevin Stejskal; two sisters, Ann Technik of Cedar Rapids and Dorothy Kiracofe of Swisher; and two brothers, Joe Stejskal and George Stejskal, both of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lillian; a son, Lt. Col. David Stejskal; and a sister, Martha Marak.

Godfrey was born October 12, 1906, the son of Josef and Anezka Horusicky Stejskal, in Podebrady, Czechoslovakia. In his youth, he was a member of the Sokol Gymnastic Association. Godfrey was united in marriage to Lillian Konigsmark on June 20, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She died September 6, 2000. Godfrey and his wife owned and operated Stejskal’s Flower Shop for 45 years, retiring in 1971. He was awarded an honorary lifetime membership in The Society of Iowa Florists Association. Godfrey was a member of the Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he also served as a trustee for two terms, the Maine Lodge IOOF and the Czech Heritage Foundation. During their 69 years of marriage, Godfrey and Lillian enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, and dancing. Godfrey was also a skilled and avid bowler.
