Merle Newton McGuire, 84, of Sullivan’s Island, SC, died peacefully, surrounded by her family and friends, Monday November 23, 2009. Mrs. McGuire was born March 13, 1925 in Charleston, SC. She is the daughter of the late Matthew and Sarah Chaplin Newton of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Mrs. McGuire was a retired Registered Nurse with St. Francis and The Red Cross. She was a devoted member of Stella Maris Catholic Church, once honored as South Carolina Catholic Woman of the Year. She was a founding member of the Widow’s Group, a “Servants of Jesus” prayer group member, and was devoted to caring for the elderly and sick as a Eucharistic Minister. Mrs. McGuire is survived by four daughters Paula McGuire of Oakland, CA, Patty Shelton of Santee, SC, Eva Stratos (Milton) of Sullivan’s Island, SC and Frances Thomas of Sullivan’s Island, SC; two sisters Mona Avinger of Vance, SC and Joyce Heeke of Lake City, FL, six grandchildren Barry Wilson, Chris Wilson, Genevieve Stratos, Milt Stratos, Justin Thomas and Brandon Thomas; one great-granddaughter Ariana Stratos-Lane and her many beloved pets. She was predeceased by her husband William F. McGuire, brothers Chris Newton and Matthew Newton and one sister Rosalee Duncan. A visitation will be held Tuesday, November 24, 2009 from 5:00-7:00 PM, with the rosary said at 5:00PM at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, 1520 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 (843) 884-3833. A funeral mass will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Stella Maris Catholic Church, 1204 Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island, SC 29482 (843) 883-3108 with burial to follow at Mt.
