Mrs. Mary Alice Furnish Howard, age 92, of Madison, Indiana, entered this life on March 30, 1919 in Vevay, Indiana. She was the daughter of the late, George Sanford & Martha Richter Furnish. She was raised in Switzerland County and was a 1937 graduate of Vevay High School. She had worked early in life for Gretchen Cole Attorney at Law and for the Richardson Insurance Agency. She was united in marriage on October 22, 1958 at the Switzerland Baptist Church in Vevay, Indiana to Norris Wayne Howard. She had resided in Jefferson County the past 41 years and was a member of the North Madison Baptist Church. She had worked for the U.S. Government for 41 years and had retired in 1981. She spent 37 years of her career at the Jefferson Proving Ground in Madison and four years at the Indiana Arsenal in Charlestown and retired as the transportation officer. In her spare time she enjoyed researching family genealogy, reading, and spending time with her family especially her granddaughters. Mary Alice died Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 1:58 a.m. at her home in Madison, Indiana. Mary Alice will be missed by her loving husband, Norris Wayne Howard of Madison, Indiana; her loving daughter: Susan Howard Schafer & her husband, Rev. Lawrence "Larry" Schafer of North Vernon, Indiana; her loving son: John N. Howard & his partner, Dr. Fred McCall of San Francisco, California; her step daughter, Jane Wakeland & her husband, Robert of Greenfield, Indiana; her grandchildren, Jessica E. Schafer of Madison, Indiana; Rachel M., Lydia E., & Rebecca J. Schafer all of North Vernon, Indiana; Andrea Ticknor of Chicago, Illinois; her step grandchildren, Jera Lee of Elmhurst, Illinois; Angie Lee of Martinsville, Indiana; Shawn Shepherd of Boise, Idaho & Steven Shepherd of Detroit, Michigan; her great grandson, Urijah E. Gabbard of North Vernon, Indiana; her nieces, Ann Pommerehn and Jeanne Pommerehn Jones both of Madison, Indiana and her great niece & great nephew, Emily Jones of Hamilton, Ohio and Adam Jones of Madison, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Sanford & Martha Richter Furnish; her brother, George E. Furnish died, Jan. 26, 1971; her sister, Lucille Pommerehn died, August 30, 2001; her mother in law, Cullie Cancilla died, Jan. 26, 2001; her nephews, Sanford Furnish died, Sept. 27, 1999 & Thomas Jeffrey Furnish died, Jan. 30, 2010; her step daughter, Ann Shepherd. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 1:00 p.m., Officiated by the Rev. Frank McGee at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street in Vevay, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery in Vevay, Indiana. Friends may call Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana, and Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until time of the service at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street in Vevay, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Madison Baptist Church. Cards are available at the funeral home.
