Ida Constant Obituary

Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Ida Josephine Constant was born Monday, April 6, 1936 at the St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, to Fred and Virginia Cook (nee: McGillivary). Being the eldest of her siblings, she witnessed a lot of changes from the past to the present. She was brought up in a farming settlement known as Cook’s farm with the families of David and Helen Cook; and Antoine and Hannah Cook. At Barrier were uncle and aunt, Isaac and Helen Pelly. Winter travel was by bombardier that cost $5.00 each for a ride. There was ice fishing and trapping. Loggers and trappers travelled at night only. A barge was used in the warmer weather that travelled up and down the river from Barrier and stopped at Carrot River-Bracken dam area. Jose, as she was known, received her education at the Big Eddy Indian Day School from the age of 6 years to 12 years old. Jose was hospitalized at the Clearwater Sanatorium having contracted TB at the age of 10 years old. The patients would get together to teach each other how to play the fiddle and guitar. Josephine often got a guitar out to strum out the songs that she was familiar with. We were often entertained by her singing. At the age of 17 years, Jose started work at the Clearwater Sanatorium in housekeeping and as a kitchen helper. At the age of 20 years, she met and married Solomon Constant on September 11, 1956. Michael Gilbert Lloyd Cook was born September 19, 1958; followed by Elizabeth Margaret Rose February 3, 1959. Her last child, Judy Lynn Constant was born February 11, 1962. Josephine never got over the loss of her baby when Judy passed away at a very young age of 3 years old on December 16, 1965. Jose started working at Jones Grocery in 1974 and retired from her career with the Grub Box in 1999. She kept in touch with the many friends that she met during her long time employment. Thank you for being a part of my mother’s life. My mother was always the happiest when her great-grandchildren came to visit her. She would laugh at their playful antics. She hugged and kissed them when they went home. My mom made regular trips to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan for a visit. She would phone to see how everyone was doing. Her grandsons, whom she loved with all her heart, are left to mourn the loss of their grandmother: James Clifford Sayese, Gabriel Thomas Sayese (Toni), Raymond Dean Sayese (Angela), Michael Owen Cook (children Anthony, Matteo, Rylan), Steve Merasty (children Marcus, Paisley) and James McGillivary (daughter Montana), Charmaine (granddaughter). My mom often told me that she always prayed for her grandsons and chapans that they would have good and peaceful lives. Josephine passed away peacefully at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, Monday, July 25, 2011 with her family by her side, age 75 years. Jose also leaves her daughter Elizabeth (Jim) Sayese; sisters, Evelyn Cook, Myra (Frank) McKenzie, Mary Jane (William) Constant, Sarah Cook; brothers Isaac (Emma) Cook and Norman Cook. Jose helped her mother raise her late sister, Margaret’s children, Howard, Eugene, Evelyn, Angela, Virginia, Lisa, Debra and Chief Michael Constant. There are also many other relatives and friends too numerous to mention who were a major part of her life. Josephine was predeceased by her husband Solomon Constant; parents Fred and Virginia Cook; son Michael Cook; daughter Judy Lynn Constant; sister Margaret Constant; brothers Simeon, Russell and Brian Cook; maternal grandparents Mary Jane and George McGillivary; paternal grandparents Hannah and Antoine Cook; nieces Kelly Anne Cook, Jennifer Lee Cook; great-niece Alexis Constant-McLeod; nephews Dionne Constant, Marty McGillivary; aunts and uncles, Helen Pelly (Isaac), Malcolm McGillivary (Margaret), Mariam Lathlin (Charles), Sarah McGillivary, Alfred George McGillivary (Mariam), Lawrence McGillivary; cousins Julius McGillivary, Robert McGillivary; brother-in-law Larry Constant.
