Helmut H.W. Schmidt, PhD, 83, a resident of Las Vegas, NM for the past 11 years, passed away on August 18, 2011 at Alta Vista Regional Hospital after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully in the presence of his loving wife Klare Schmidt and his two sons. He was born in Danzig, Germany on February 21, 1928. He grew up in Germany where he received his degrees in Mathematics and Physics from the Universities of Goettingen and Cologne where he met and married Klare Niessen 56 years ago. He taught theoretical physics at universities in Germany, Vancouver, Canada, and the U. S. In 1965 he immigrated with his wife Klare and 3 children to the United States where he worked for 5 years as a Research Scientist for the Boeing Company in Seattle, WA. He was one of the first physicists to apply modern technology to the study of psychic phenomena, working at the Rhine Research Center in Durham, N.C. and the Mind Science Foundation in San Antonio, TX. At his retirement in 1993 he and Klare moved to New Mexico, first to Mora and later to Las Vegas because of his love for the mountains. He was fortunate to be able to enjoy many years to hike, together with his beloved dog Pepper. He is survived by his wife Klare of Las Vegas, NM; his sons, Jurgen and Rudiger Schmidt and their families of San Antonio, TX; his daughter, Karin Schmidt, DVM of Anchorage, AK, and numerous family members in Germany. Helmut was active in the local Senior Circle group and the Las Vegas Opera Guild. Cremation has already taken place and the family asks for privacy at this time.
