Obituary for Carl F. Gaines

Mr. Carl F. Gaines, age 81, of Madison, Indiana, entered this life on May 6, 1928 in Owenton, Kentucky the son of Marion & Mae Estes Gaines, both of whom preceded him in death. He was raised in Owen County attending school there. He was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Dawson in Owenton, Kentucky on June 4, 1948. To this union arrived two sons and a daughter to bless their home. He owned and operated the Wayfarer Motel in Jeffersonville for five years. He moved to the Madison community in 1954. He worked for several years at the Madison State Hospital as a ward attendant. He then worked for the Madison Cable Company helping to install in downtown Madison. He also worked as a carpenter for Franklin Herin Construction helping to build houses. He purchased a farm and enjoyed farming. He owned and operated Gaines Shoe Store in Madison retiring in 1990. He was a faithful member of the Hanover Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed being with family and friends, loved to meet at McDonalds every morning to visit and drink coffee and have breakfast with his many friends. Loved going out to dinner with family and friends. Carl died Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 1:10 p.m. at the King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison, Indiana.


Carl will be missed by his loving wife of sixty one years: Ann Dawson Gaines of Madison, Indiana; his loving daughter: Debra Horine & her husband: David of Hanover, Indiana; his loving son: Mark Gaines & his wife: Patty of Madison, Indiana; his loving sister: Betty Wilhoite of Owenton, Kentucky; his loving brothers: William Gaines & his wife: Rosemary of Owenton, Kentucky, Don Gaines & his wife: Sue of Owenton, Kentucky, Bobby Gaines of Owenton, Kentucky; his grandchildren: Brent Shewmaker & his wife: Amy; Brian Shewmaker & his wife: Kim; Meghan Horine; Jodie Giltner; Cory Madison & Laura Tingle; his great grandchildren: Madison Shewmaker, Zane Shewmaker, Blake Shewmaker & Kole Shewmaker; several nieces, nephews & other relatives; his sister in law: June Wood of Paris, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents: Marion & Mae Estes Gaines; his son: Carl Michael Gaines died, October 17, 1981.


Funeral services will be conducted Friday, December 11, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., by Rev. J.D. Traylor, Rev. James Sparks, Bro. George A. Severn at Hanover Baptist Church, 151 West Main Street, Hanover, Indiana. Interment will follow in the Marble Valley Cemetery, Madison, Indiana.


Friends may call Thursday from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service at the Hanover Baptist Church, 151 West Main Street in Hanover, Indiana.


Memorial contributions may be made to Hanover Baptist Church bus fund in lieu of flowers. Cards are available at the funeral home.
