Sherry Joy

Sherry Ann Joy passed away on January 15, 2012 in Tucson, Arizona after a long illness. Sherry was surrounded by her daughters at the time of her death. Sherry was always curious about the world and loved adventure and exploration, especially in France. She loved and studied art, languages, music and the weather; loved to read and write and most of all, she loved to spend time with her family and her many close friends. The oldest child of Emery and Dorothy Stockham, Sherry was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa on March 26, 1930 during a snowstorm. She grew up in Bloomfield, Iowa, where, in 1948, she married Charles Pirtle. She and Charles had one daughter, Stephanie. Sherry moved to Tucson in 1950. After her divorce from Charles, Sherry married Col. Frederick W. Joy, Jr. They traveled the world with the Air Force living in Canada, Spain, Washington, DC and Minnesota. She and Fred had three daughters, Michele, Ann and Suzanne. Later in life, Sherry moved back to Washington, DC where she earned her B.A. in Interior Design at Mount Vernon College and then earned her ASID credentials, after which she owned her own design agency until 1993. In 2005, she relocated to Tucson after the death of her youngest daughter. Sherry is survived by her daughters, Stephanie, Michele and Ann Joy; French exchange daughter, Catherine Herry Fernandez; sons-in-law, Tom Shahriari and Vern Thomas, Leighton Ford and her beloved sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jo and Frank McClure. Sherry's greatest love in life and her finest legacy are her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service celebrating Sherry's life will be held at Lodge on the Desert at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2012. The family wishes to thank the staff at Catalina Care for their kindness and friendship to Sherry in the last four months of her life.
