John Gilbride Obituary

John Gilbride was born at 442 53rd Street in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. He was the son of Charles and Catherine (nee Collins) Gilbride. Mrs. Gilbride had 16 births but only 11 were born alive. John was one of eleven children. His brothers and sisters Muriel Hynes, Rita Pallay, Charles, Patrick, William, Frank, Thomas Aquinas, Kenny, Ruth and Janet Murphy. Only Ruth Gilbride survives.John had 21 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews. John's father Charles; brother of Willy, Patrick and Frank worked at Todd shipyards. Most of John's older brothers also worked at Todd shipyards. John wanted to enter the military service when war broke out like his five older brothers. In June 1945, at the age of 18 John enlisted in the Marines. He served till 1950 and rose to the rank of Sergeant and then he enlisted in the Marine reserves. John worked for the United States Post office for 39 years.Later, he worked for the housing police for 25 years which merged with the police department. John worked continuously from the age of 17 to 84 when he retired in February 2012. John is survived by his sister Ruth. The first mass in the parish of Visitation in Red Hook, Brooklyn was offered in the Gilbride's home.
