George Potter

Mr. George Franklin Potter II, 82, of Martinsburg went home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 10, 2009. He was born February 2, 1927 in Punxsutawney, PA to the late Guy Victor Potter and Janet Jackson (Brew) Potter. He was raised in Johnsonburg, PA and enlisted in the US Army in 1944 during World War II. In 1946, he returned to Penn State University where he graduated from the School of Civil Engineering. He was commissioned in the US Army Reserves where he remained until retirement at the rank of Major. He worked as a Civil Engineer for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (Penn DOT) for thirty-five years primarily in the Indiana, PA office. A Masters degree in Planning was earned from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Here in Martinsburg, he served as the City Planner and Engineer and was active in the West Virginia State Chapters of the American Planning Association and WV Hazardous Waste Management. He was an active Rotarian for forty-four years in Indiana, PA and Martinsburg serving both clubs as President. Additionally, he volunteered in the Red Cross serving on the local Red Cross Board of Directors and for Hospice of the Panhandle. His love for God’s Word was evident as he led biweekly Bible studies in his home for over forty-five years which continue still today. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Suzanne (Smith) Potter; daughter Sally Potter Piper and husband, Tom, of Chesterfield, MO; son, George F. Potter III and his wife, Susannah of Parkville, MO; and daughter Kathryn Brew (Potter) Perez and husband, Danny of Fayetteville, NC; eleven grandchildren: Laura, Julia and Suzanne Piper; George F. Potter IV, Andrew, Bennett, and Elizabeth Potter; and Maxton, Landon, Dannon and Regent Perez; and one sister, Catherine Herold Allison of Charlottesville, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Guy Victor Potter. A celebration of the 82 years of the life of Mr. George F. Potter will be conducted at the Brown Funeral Home on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 11:00 am. Mr. Brent Billard will be officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either Berkeley Senior Services, (217 N High St., Martinsburg, 25404) or Hospice of the Panhandle, Inc. (122 Waverly Ct., Martinsburg, 25403).
