William Sontag

Clinton-William F. Sontag, 93, of Bourne St., died on Monday, August 24, 2009 at Bedford Hills Care and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford, NH surrounded by family. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty two years, Irene M. (Peterson) Sontag, who died in 1994. He is survived by two daughters, Elaine Andrejko and her husband Robert of NY; and Carole Sontag and her husband Raymond R. Paynter, Jr. of Clinton; four sons, Paul W. Sontag and his wife Joan of NH; Frederick H. Sontag and his wife Teressa of Clinton; Richard J. Sontag and his wife Jennifer of NH; and William J. Sontag and his wife Tricia of CO; fourteen grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Ralph Sontag. William was born in Clinton to the late Fred R. and Annie (Wahl) Sontag. He attended local schools and was a graduate of the Clinton High School Class of 1934. He enlisted to proudly serve our nation in the United States Army Air Corps as an airplane mechanic during WWII and returned to begin a lifelong career as a pipe fitter. Bill worked for more than thirty years for the Honeywell Company in Worcester ultimately retiring in 1981. Through retirement he took great pleasure in driving a school bus for athletic programs in the Clinton School System. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist and served for many years as a call firefighter for the Town of Clinton. As the most senior longstanding member of the Clinton Turn Verein, Bill managed numerous club programs, including basketball, bowling, gymnastics, and the cribbage league, which he founded and directed. A sports enthusiast and athlete he enjoyed golfing, and coaching little league baseball many years. Funeral services are to be held on Friday, August 28, 2009 from the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10AM at St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St., Clinton. Burial is to follow at St. John Cemetery in Lancaster. Calling hours will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, August 27, 2009 from 6 until 8PM.
