Connie Morris

Connie Jeanne Young Morris, 60, of East Palatka, passed from this life Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center following a brief illness. A native of Jacksonville, Connie was a 1970 graduate of Ribault High School in Jacksonville and a 1974 graduate of Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia where she received her bachelor’s degree. In 1975, Connie began what would be a 38 year career with the Putnam County School District teaching home economics at Palatka South High School. She continued teaching at Palatka High in 1977 when the two high schools were combined and remained there her whole career, retiring just a few weeks ago as the district cooperative training director. In addition to her teaching duties at Palatka High School, Connie was involved in the PTO, coached the varsity girls soccer team from 1999 – 2005, was the Senior Class Sponsor and also coordinated the Grad Nite trips and graduation ceremonies. She was also involved in the community as a member of, Beta Sigma Phi, The Woman’s Club of Palatka and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where she was active in the Daughters of the King, the Episcopal Church Women, served as the vestry clerk and sang in the choir. While growing up and living in Jacksonville, she was active in the Rainbow Girls (a Masonic youth service organization) from 1966-70. She had also been a member of the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville where she sang in the choir. In earlier years while living in Putnam County, Connie had been an active supporter of the Democratic Party. Some of Connie’s favorite past-times were arts and crafts, horseback riding and hunting and fishing with her husband Richard. She was preceded in death by her father, Conn Young. She is survived by her husband of 8 years, Richard E. Morris of East Palatka, her mother, Jewell W. Young, a sister, Julie Covell, a niece, Victoria Covell, all of Jacksonville and her mother-in-law, Emma Lou Morris of East Palatka. Services celebrating Connie’s life will be at 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 14, 2013 at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka with Father Buzz Yarborough, The Reverend James M. Dorn, III and Dr. Don Aycock officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday at the funeral home from 6-8 P.M. and Wednesday from 3:00 P.M. till the time of services at 4:00 P.M. Graveside services and burial will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff and faculty of PHS (past and present), The Woman’s Club of Palatka, Daughters of the King – St. Mark’s, and members of Beta Sigma Phi. Flowers are gratefully accepted or memorial donations may be made in her memory to Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center, 6400 St. Johns Ave., Palatka, FL 32177.
