Mary Nickolaou

Mary C. Nickolaou, age 84, of Battle Creek, passed away, Tuesday September 10, 2013 at the Borgess Medical Center of Kalamazoo. Mary was born August 2, 1929 in Battle Creek, to Chris and Grozda (Ivanmoff) Nicola and was a lifelong resident. Mary graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1947 and worked in the family business, the Battle Creek Bread Company. She married George Nickolaou on April 24, 1955. Mary and George owned and operated several local businesses including Vello’s Drive-In, the Apartment Lounge and Oakland Hills Golf Club. Mary was a parishioner and board member of St. Elias Eastern Orthodox Church, and supported many area organizations that serve mentally disabled people, and many other community charities. Mary was an avid University of Michigan football fan and enjoyed watching and collecting classic movies and Hollywood memorabilia. Mary is survived by her husband of 58 years, George Vello Nickolaou, a daughter, Rozanne Nickolaou, of Battle Creek, sons, George Vello (Anriikka) Nickolaou Jr. of Brighton, MI, and Louie John (Lizabeth) Nickolaou of Battle Creek, grandchildren, Katherine and John Nickolaou, and Laura and Adrienne Botsford, sisters, Virginia Petch of Battle Creek, and Suzanne (Sid) Horsfall of Rockwood, TN, a brother, Eli Nicola of Richmond, VA. Mary was preceded in death by an infant son, Mark Elia Nickolaou her parents, and her maternal grandparents, Louie and Luba Ivanmoff. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:00Pm to 8:00 PM Sunday at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service, 223 N. Bedford Rd. A Panikhida Service will be held at 7:00 PM Sunday at the Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday at the St. Elias Eastern Orthodox Church, 5066 B Dr. South. Memorials may be given to St. Elias Eastern Orthodox Church.
