Ernest Jenkins

Ernest Lee Jenkins, Jr., 84, of Black Mountain formerly of Oak Island, NC, passed away Thursday, September 26, 2013. He was born August 15, 1929 in Great Falls, SC to the late Ernest Lee and Gertrude Mason Jenkins. Ernest was a member of Oak Island Presbyterian Church and Oak Island Senior Citizens Center. He was a previous member of the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, and cooking. He retired from Winn Dixie after 42 years. After retirement, he obtained his U.S. Coast Guard Captains License. Ernest was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He also enjoyed volunteering his time to help construct buildings. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his infant sister. Ernest is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara Smith Jenkins; daughter, Susan Jenkins Jumper (Wilson) of Black Mountain, NC; sons, Richard Lee Jenkins (Theresa) of Rock Hill, SC, and Todd Smith Jenkins of Gastonia, NC; sister, Gertrude Wright of Grover, NC; grandchildren, Clay Jenkins (Karen), Sarah Osborne (John), Tracy Smith (Zack), and Kim Reece (Travis); great grandchildren, Matthew and Micah Jenkins, Emma and Leah Osborne, Avery Smith, Berkley and Porter Reece. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church in Black Mountain, NC with the Reverends Shannon Kershner and Berry French officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SOAR – Southport/Oak Island Animal Rescue, 3376 St. Charles Place, Southport, NC 28461 or Oak Island Presbyterian Church, 1503 E. Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, NC 28465.
