Elizabeth Hooyman Obituary

Elizabeth H. Hooyman “Betty”, age 87, died peacefully at her home with her loving family by her side on Tuesday, November 26, 2013. Betty was born on October 1, 1926, in Neenah to the late Raymond and Cecilia (Spielbauer) Syring. She graduated from Appleton High School with the class of 1944. That same summer, she was united in marriage for 68 years to Edward A. Hooyman in Appleton, until his passing in 2012. She is now “whole again” and reunited with him. Betty spent the first 20 years of her married life at home raising her nine children. In the 1960’s, she took a part-time job with the Playhouse Toy Company and later with House of Lloyd. She was very successful and held a District Sales Manager role for many years. Her achievements were rewarded with trips all over the world for both her and Ed. Betty loved Italy the most of the many, many places they traveled. In their later years, they spent winters at their home in Florida. Betty’s real passions were cooking and entertaining. Her door was always open and table was always full. Christmas was her favorite time of year, and everyone looked forward to the cooking and baking she did all month to prepare for Christmas Eve. The family will miss her home cooking and her generous spirit most of all. A grandchild said “I’m never going to walk into a room where anyone is going to think I’m as special as grandma did.” Mother had a way of making you stand on your own, while giving you the feeling she had your back. If you did wrong, she let you know in private, but always stood behind you in public. Betty was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Appleton. Mother will be truly and deeply missed by her nine children, her sixteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. Her family of nine and their families are: TRUDY Fagg, DAN (Bonnie) Hooyman and his daughter Rebecca, her daughters Gretchen and Eliese; PAT (Dick) Pleier and their daughter Brittany (Kevin) Tapply and her children Ali (Lily) and sons Alexander and Matthew, their son Michael and his daughters Alyssa and Emily; LARRY Hooyman and his sons Troy and Bret; BILL (Joan) Hooyman and their sons Andy and Adam (Stephanie); CARLA Klein and her daughter Whitney and son Eric; ANN (Mike) Lutz and their sons Matthew and Eric (Autumn and Makayla) and daughter Ashley (Mike) Dercks and son Evan; GREGG Hooyman and his daughter Amanda (Jared) Kamin, and his son Jason (Cherity); and TIM (Sandy) Hooyman and his sons Nick and Alex. She is further survived by a brother, Mike (Delia) Syring, a sister Marge Weyenberg, and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Ed, parents, her brother Tom and sister Rita. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 am on Monday, December 2, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W. Pine St., Appleton. Friends may visit from 6 to 8 pm on Sunday, December 1, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel, and directly at the church on Monday from 9 am until the time of service. Interment will take place at a later date at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Freedom. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Betty and her entire family wishes to give a heartfelt Thank You to her daughter Pat and her husband Dick Pleier for stepping up and providing the 24/7 care with love that allowed Betty to enjoy the last months of her life in her own home, where she so wanted to be. We would also like to thank all those who worked so hard to make Mothers home ready for her to return to, especially the Lutz family. The family also wishes to extend a special thank you to Lisa Gunderson, NP and her staff as well as the ThedaCare at Home Hospice for their compassionate care given to Betty.
