Obituary for Charles Rayford Evans

Funeral service will be at 6pm at Crestwood Chapel for Charles Rayford Evans, age 79 of Gadsden, who passed away on Friday February 7, 2014. Pastor Mike Alexander and Rev. Larry Fuhrman will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Memorial Funeral Home will direct services. Rayford was ordained as a deacon at age 25 at James Memorial Baptist Church. He was active in all phases of church work for many years. He served on the Etowah County Board of Education for 6 years. He worked in the engineering department at Gulf States Steel for 45 years. He was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife Marie; whom he married on St. Valentines Day, 1954 in a beautiful red and white wedding at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this Valentine’s Day. They have a daughter Amy Evans Merka (Bill), of College Station, Texas; son Mark Evans of Hokes Bluff; four grandchildren, Robert and Jonathan Evans and Sara and Madaleine Merka; brother Norris Evans; sisters in law Merle Upton, Lois Dubois, and Bobbie Evans; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved Collie, Missy, rescue dog Max, and Maine Coon cat, Tiger. Pallbearers will be family members. Honorary pallbearers are all members of members of Jim Stivender’s Sunday School class at First Baptist Church, Gadsden. The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Gadsden or to your favorite charity.
