Brian Dorscht

Brian Clifford Dorscht (August 23, 1954 – April 9, 2017) It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Brian Clifford Dorscht. Brian was filled with wonder, curiosity, and magic. He lived a life he loved, laughed with his whole body, sang from the depths of his soul, and shared his love of creativity with grand gestures, special projects, and in small moments. Brian had a way about him that made anyone close to him feel special. Brian smiled with his sparkling, big blue eyes and his energy could not be contained. He never missed an opportunity for laughter, silliness, fun, or adventure. Brian was an example of what it means to be a good person. He was kind, compassionate, and thoughtful. He valued courage and integrity and was a strong advocate for equality and the arts. Brian was an outstanding father. He ensured his daughters always knew how proud he was of them. He encouraged and supported them through every phase of their lives, and took special care in showing how much he loved them. Brian was born in Kitchener, Ontario to Father Russell Dorscht and Mother Eleanor Dorscht (Simpson), Father to Erin Dorscht Bogle (Kristie) and Julian Dorscht (Jacob). His siblings include Susan Reid (Bob), Kathy Wagner (Gary), Marilyn Belanger (Joseph), Lori Weber (James), and Kevin Dorscht (Tricia). Brian is predeceased by his mother, both paternal grandparents, several aunts and uncles, and one nephew. Brian was very active in Kitchener/Waterloo (KW) Musical Productions and KW Little Theatre as an actor, teacher, and director, and was the co-founder and Artistic Director for Project People. After a motorcycle accident in 1979, he ended up working at Mutual Life as an Office Manager, but kept his passion for creativity alive through various venues across Canada. Moving to Calgary in 1988, he taught vocal lessons, co-founded Calgary Young Peoples Theatre, and was the Artistic Director there for 14 years. Brian left CYPT and became a Performing Arts Coordinator for the City of Calgary. He later left to become the Festival Curator for Calgary International Children’s Festival. Brian directed and sang in many choirs throughout his life that brought joy to countless listeners, especially with his own voice. A Celebration of Life service will be held in Calgary on Saturday, April 15th at 10:30am at the Unitarian Church of Calgary. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 6th at 1:00pm at Homer Watson House in Kitchener/Waterloo. We would like to thank Carewest Sarcee Hospice, Brian’s family doctor, Dr. Steven Burt, the Unitarian Church of Calgary, and all others who have supported Erin (Kristie) and Julian (Jacob) through this time.
