Joanne Mazurkewich Calgary, Alberta Obituary

Joanne Mazurkewich

Joanne Mazurkewich September 16, 1952 – Saskatoon SK October 12, 2016 - Okotoks, AB Joanne Mazurkewich passed away at Foothills Country Hospice after a long battle with cancer. True to herself until her last breathe Joanne demonstrated her selfless nature as she was more concerned for those who were around and taking care of her than for herself. Joanne grew up in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and graduated from City Park Collegiate High School. She later went on to receive her Marketing diploma from the University of Calgary in the 1990s. Joanne met the love of her life Ken Mazurkewich through her brother Don while Ken was in his third year of University and they wed in 1973 in Saskatoon and were happily married for 43 years. Joanne worked within the floor industry for GE Shnier for over 20 plus years then took her chances in the Oil and Gas sector and finally finishing her career off with the City of Calgary. By her own strong will and determined nature Joanne was able to overcome any and all obstacles that were thrown her way throughout her lifetime. She was a loving and loyal person who would fiercely defend her beliefs and those who she loved. Joanne loved to play team sports and even took up soccer while in her thirties and was a founding member of the “Old Boots Soccer Team.” Joanne also selflessly volunteered on numerous soccer boards beginning with the Eastside Soccer Club, Calgary Minor Soccer Association, Calgary Women’s Soccer and ultimately became the president of the Calgary Soccer Federation, a role which she took great pride in having, and always focused on how she could make soccer better for the players. Joanne loved spending time at Buck Lake and traveling, something her and Ken started to do more of after 2013. She spent most of her time appreciating life and enjoying those around her, for those of us who knew her well, we are all better for it. Joanne is survived by her daughter Heather, son in-law Travis, son Trevor; grandchildren Finnegan and Calder and predeceased by her husband Ken. A Celebration of Joanne’s Life will be held at Cranston Century Hall (11 Cranarch Road SE) on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 11:00 am.
