Keith Miles

Keith Miles March 16th, 1949 - Tuesday, April 17th, 2018 Keith Miles passed away on Tuesday, April 17th, 2018 at the age of 69. Keith Michael Miles was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on March 16, 1949, to parents Ken and Claire (nee Harford) Miles, and passed April 17, 2018. Keith was the second of three sons, including an older brother Ken and younger brother Bryan. Keith was predeceased by his father Ken, and later by his older brother Ken (Kenneth). Keith is survived by his wife Penny, mother Claire, brother Bryan; children, in order of age, Terry Miles, Tina Miles, Ashlee Thornton, Kendelle Thornton, and Michael Miles; grandchildren Tylor Nielsen, and McKenzie Nielsen; and great-grandchildren Landen Nielsen, Kieran Nielsen and Sophia Nielson. Keith grew up and went to high school in Moose Jaw where he excelled in all things athletic; winning provincial awards in wrestling and tennis, and a college scholarship offer to play football. However, his athletic abilities and interests were put aside to pursue more academic matters at the University of Saskatchewan, where he was an avid participant in intramural sports, particularly the Ore Gangue hockey team. Keith graduated the U of S with a B.Sc. Geology in 1973, following which he and his family moved to Calgary. In true geological fashion, Keith began his career in the field, learning the heart of the oil business, on the well site where the drill bit tells the tale. He was soon hired by Canada-Cities Service, a large exploration and producing company, to work in their Calgary office, and was intimately involved in some their then-state-of-the-art seismic techniques used to successfully define, drill and develop natural gas resources. Within a few short years, he had accumulated the experience and record of success, and associates, to be able to attract financing to found his first independent oil and gas company. As was the custom during that period of a strong, junior independent oil and gas industry in Canada, his small successful company was acquired by a larger independent, and he went on to start a number of other new independent companies and ventures. He loved the “finding it” part of the industry, and it was not uncommon to visit his home any evening of the week and find him with well logs strewn about the kitchen and a new geological map being created on the kitchen table. During his earlier career as a geologist, Keith maintained his athletic interest through his participation in both petroleum league and community fastball as a back-catcher, as well as racquetball, occasional golf, and skiing with friends and family. While work and sports were important to Keith, his life was about his family. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather who spoke often and proudly of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Not surprisingly, Christmas was probably Keith’s favorite time of year. It was the perfect opportunity for him to indulge his generous nature and fill his home with gifts for the family he loved. To his friends and associates, Keith was universally and always known as an outgoing, engaging, humorous, non-judgemental, and in particular, generous, man. He will be missed and remembered by all who knew him, and it will be no surprise to anyone to learn that Keith, in a typically generous last gesture, was able to pass on his gift of sight to someone in need. Keith’s family held a private celebration of his life and plans a later spreading of his remains when spring arrives and the countryside is green.
