Alexander (Alex) Buchan Obituary

On August 15, 2017 we said goodbye to Alexander (Alex) Buchan. Oldest son to Alexander and Maggie Bella Buchan, he was a very proud Canadian and Scotsman who came to Canada with the Hudson’s Bay Company in the mid-1950’s for an adventure. He spent time in Fort Chimo, Payne Bay, Qikiqtajuak, Yellowknife, Kugluktuk, Cambridge Bay and Pond Inlet before settling in Taloyoak. During full career as a fur trader and retail manager, he hired and trained dozens of northerners contributing to the north to this day. In Taloyoak he met and married Annie. They would have celebrated their 50th anniversary in October. He was a role model to his children, Alex (Michelle) and Fiona (Grant) with his strong work ethic, independence, compassion and dedication to supporting his family. He was a passionate local historian with an encyclopedic knowledge of Arctic exploration. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and the stories and love that he gave his grandchildren, Audla, Skye, Tara and Iola. We were lucky to have him for the time he was with us. Although he loved the north, at his request he will be laid to rest in Peterhead, Scotland, close to his family. We would like to thank everyone who helped care and support our family through his illness, especially the staff of Windermere Manor in Edmonton, Alberta.
