Alice Solyma Obituary

It is with overwhelming sadness I share the news of the very sudden and unexpected passing of Alice Solyma on March 19, 2016. Alice will be greatly missed by her only sister, Natalie Solyma of Edmonton; her Uncle, Mike (Doreen) Booy of Edmonton; Auntie, Ann Booy (late Nick Booy) of North Battleford, SK; along with many cousins in Canada and Ukraine. She was predeceased by her parents, Nicholas and Nellie Solyma. For over 35 years Alice was employed, in a career she truly loved, with the Natural Resources Canada Pacific Forestry Centre. Major federal government restructuring in 2014 sadly brought an end to this position. This led her to search for, and successfully find, contract work with the Institute of Oceans and Fisheries which she really enjoyed. She was a rare soul who really loved her work. The kindness and support of both Alice’s neighbors and her colleagues in the library network has been greatly appreciated. Alice would have been very touched also. Alice valued her family, co-workers and friends and would do anything to help them. Alice has lived in Victoria since 1978, but has taken one last flight to return to Edmonton to be near her family. Funeral Rite Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m. at St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 10951 - 107 Street, Edmonton. Reverend Father Cornell Zubritsky officiating with interment in St. Michael's Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations may be made in Alice's name to the BC Cancer Agency, #150, 686 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V5Z 1G1 who helped her successfully battle thyroid cancer in 1995. Donations may also be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Live like tomorrow never comes, Alice did.
