Calvin Morton Obituary

It is with wonderful memories and sad hearts that the family of Calvin Murray Morton announces his passing. Cal was born May 21, 1930, and died in Mayerthorpe, AB on February 16, 2016. Cal is survived by the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Laura; seven children and thirteen grandchildren, Barbara (Ken) Martin, Michael, Blair and Daniel, Greg (Connie) Morton, Kelly, Shaun and Jacqueline, Shauna Morton (Brian Holroyd), Brady and Bryn, Brenda (Dean) Huntley, Troy, Tyson and Taylor, Tammy (Kevin) Gabriel, Jerrid and Brett, Kim Morton (Frank Hughes) and Lisa Morton; and seven great-grandchildren. Cal spent his childhood in Seattle, WA, Wainwright, AB, Vancouver, BC, Hamilton and Sebright, ON and Mayerthorpe, AB where he lived until his passing. Cal enjoyed a game of poker, especially with his grandchildren, discussions on politics, the world economy, and business. He was an avid reader and enjoyed passionate debate on world issues. Cal never met a stranger and was curious about and interested in the lives of others. While he was very successful in many business ventures, he was proudest of his family. Cal was a caring father and family leader who encouraged independence and applauded personal achievement. He was full of advice and his encouraging ways and unique sense of humour were all part of the man we loved. He was a true visionary who embodied the entrepreneurial spirit. Cal was a New Holland Dealer, owned school busses throughout the province and was a founding owner of Westcamp Catering. When Cal felt he had made a good business deal, he celebrated by lighting up a cigar. Cal loved planting trees and made his yard a sanctuary for wildlife. He was larger than life and will be greatly missed. His passing leaves a huge hole in the hearts of his family. Calvin was predeceased by his father, Earle Morton in 1953, and his mother, Lillian Morton Anderson in 2003. At Cal’s request there will be no funeral service. The family will gather for a private celebration of his life. Friends of Cal and Laura are welcome to join the family for lunch at the Mayerthorpe Royal Canadian Legion on Monday, February 22 at 2:00 p.m. The family thanks Dr. Jamal and the staff at the Mayerthorpe Healthcare Centre for their kind care. Also thank you to Dr. Loree Larratt at the Cross Cancer Institute. In lieu of other tributes, the family requests donations to Mayerthorpe Hospital Auxiliary Association, Palliative Care Unit, c/o Box 30, Mayerthorpe, AB T0E 1N0 or the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Cross Cancer Institute, 11560 University Avenue, Edmonton, AB T6G 1Z2.
