Carl Man Chu Yim Obituary

Carl Man Chu Yim, 60, passed away with family at his side on April 11, 2016, at the Whitecourt Healthcare Center after a short battle with liver cancer. Carl Yim is survived by his wife, Lauri Paul; son, Jordon (fiancée Nicole); son, Devan (Cynthia); son, Logan (fiancé Carl); grand-daughter. Minnie; parents, Errol and Yee Fun; brothers, John (Beth) and, Robert (Pheonia) and much loved family and friends. Carl was born in Hong Kong, China, on March 13, 1956 and was the first son to Errol and Yee Fun Yim. The family briefly emigrated to Trinidad and Tobago in 1962 before emigrating again to Canada in October 1964 and settling in Nanaimo, B.C. While growing up in Nanaimo Carl developed a passion for sports. From working on his tennis backhand on the practice wall at Bowen Park to shooting baskets on empty courts, it served as a foundation for his work ethic and strong value of constant improvement. After graduating from high school in 1974 Carl left Nanaimo to attend the University of British Columbia where he earned a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering. After graduation he moved to Port Alberni, BC for his first job as an engineer in the pulp and paper industry. While there he met the love of his life, Lauri Paul. Carl and Lauri moved to Surrey, BC in October 1984 where he joined Domtar Vancouver where he worked for 22 years working his way up to Senior Process Engineer. In November 1984, Carl and Lauri celebrated the birth of their first son Jordon, following in March 1987, the birth of the twins Devan and Logan. In 2013, Carl was blessed with granddaughter, Minnie. Even with the demands of a family and career, Carl always enjoyed playing at his local racquet club, running 10k’s, and playing golf. His kids would see him at their ball games and major tournaments supporting them from the sidelines. Carl also enjoyed reading in his spare time, pouring over the latest spy thriller, plus he spent many hours bringing old computers back to life. Carl and Lauri donated these “new” computers to families who could not otherwise afford one. When Domtar shut its doors, Carl found a position in Whitecourt, AB and joined Alberta Newsprint Company in February 2007. It was a new opportunity to make a difference as a Process Engineer and improve the product mix of the company. Carl was also a well-respected member of the community admired for his hard work and dedication. He established the Town’s first squash league and was a member of the local golf club. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, April 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Whitecourt Seniors Circle, 5212 – 50 Street, Whitecourt. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to the Friends of Whitecourt Society, Box 1101, Whitecourt, AB T7S 1P1.
