Elmer Foster Carefoot

November 20, 1917 – January 24, 2015 On January 24, 2015, a sunny, warm afternoon, Elmer Carefoot peacefully passed away at the age of 97. He has gone to join his soul mate, his loving wife of 71 years, Irene, who predeceased him on May 8, 2013. Left to cherish his memories are his daughters, Sharon (Rod) Sumner of Niagara Falls, ON and Earla (Cliff) Wagar of Redwater, AB; three grandchildren, Jeff (Kelly) Wagar and great-granddaughter, Tayten of Redwater; Sarah (Serge) Mister and great-granddaughters, Eve and Anne of Ottawa, ON; and Graham (Irene) Sumner and great-granddaughter, Cayleigh of Whistler, BC; two brothers, Evison of Edmonton and Lloyd (Ruth) of Lethbridge; as well as two sisters-in-law, Jean Carefoot of Chilliwack, BC and Judy Tomlinson of Edmonton; two brothers-in-law, Michael Letersky and Gordon Hodgson, both of Edmonton, and a heart full of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends. Elmer was the eldest son of William and Mary Elsie Carefoot. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Gordon, Earl, Norman and Russel and great-nephew, Andy Carefoot. Although Elmer loved to travel, his roots were firmly planted in Waskatenau. He was born on the family farm north-west of Waskatenau. In 1976, he and Irene “retired”, moving five miles to a cozy home in Waskatenau. It was there that Elmer and Irene lived until Irene’s health took her to the Continuing Care Centre in Radway. Elmer continued to live in their home until late December, 2014 when he conceded to move to the Diamond Springs Lodge in Redwater, where he enjoyed his last few weeks with friends, old and new, and the wonderful care of the staff and homecare nurses. Elmer enjoyed a wonderful, healthy life. His passing was not the result of a lengthy or even a short illness. His heart just wore out. Elmer lived with a passion for life, for his family and friends (especially the little children), his garden and flowers, and the birds, squirrels and deer that would visit daily to eat from the feeders he set out. He welcomed each morning and filled each day. His quiet presence is going to be missed. Memorial Service Saturday, January 31 at 1:00 p.m. at Waskatenau Community Hall, 5104 – 50 Street, Waskatenau, AB. Dr. Earle Sharam officiating with inurnment to follow in Waskatenau United Church Cemetery. Elmer’s faith was the focal point of his life and he lived it by ensuring that the church was maintained and for at least 50 years he lovingly maintained the cemetery where his family and friends rested, and now he will rest. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Waskatenau United Church Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 392, Waskatenau, AB T0A 3P0.
