Florence Sakae Ingham (nee Urano) Obituary

Florence Sakae Ingham, nee Urano, passed away in Edmonton on December 24, 2015 at the age of 89.

Florence was born in Vancouver, BC in 1926. She was oldest of child of Tsurukichi Urano and Yoshie Nakai, both from Wakayama Ken, Japan. Florence was born into a family of twelve children with four brothers and four sisters remaining. She is survived by seven children, Walter (Jan) Ingham, Robert Ingham, Gail R. Ingham (Geoff Thompson), Shar Levine (Paul Rosenberg), Violet Ann (George) Sexsmith, Stanley Parker (Christine) Ingham and Michael G. (Elizabeth Reschke) Ingham; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her beloved husband, Stanley Parker Ingham, predeceased her in 1980.

Florence lived a most challenging life and never shied away from facing those challenges. She was a stay-at-home mom for a period of ten years until she found her dream job with the University of Alberta and the Faculty of Dentistry. Along with Dr. Gordon Geldart and Dr. Walter Buck, she participated in creating a Dental Outreach Program that supplied dental services to children and adults living in Northern Alberta. The program exists to this day and its success has received World recognition. As the program is part of the Dental curriculum, it allows valuable practical experience for undergraduate dental students during a two-week internship, under the supervision of licensed dentists. Her valuable contribution also included assisting at Continuing Education Courses and the Annual Alberta Dental Conference. She was also an active supporter of the EJCA Seniors, as well as contributing many hours to the Christmas Bureau.

In 2003, Mrs. Ingham was recognized for her monumental contributions with an Honorary Membership to the Alberta Dental College and Association. She was only one of three non-dentists to ever receive such an honour.

The family is extremely grateful for the wonderful attention she received from the Palliative care unit with the Northside Alberta Health with special thanks to Tracy Wright, Dr. Barton, and in-house, Murielle Menard.

A Celebration of Florence's Life will be held at the Edmonton Japanese Community Centre at a later date. As Florence was a strong proponent of feeding the less fortunate, if friends so desire, tributes are gratefully accepted to the Food Bank of Edmonton or to the Christmas Bureau.
