It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dad, Ronald Sabourin on May 20, 2016, at the age of 81 years. Ronald is survived by his children, Jacquie, James, Wade and Renee; their mother, Helen; grandchildren, Etienne, Dominic, Soona Chhai and Theara; as well as his late sister’s family; and other extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Henri; mother, Helen; and sister, Joan Struk. Dad was born in Chicago, IL, and moved to Edmonton with his family as a very young boy. He had an idyllic childhood growing up in the 40’s and shared memories that included summertime adventures with boyhood friends at Edmonton’s Mill Creek Ravine Park and the surrounding prairieland by his home. In the winter, dad took to ski jumping and downhill skiing at the Edmonton Ski Club. He spoke fondly of travelling by train with his mother and sister to Chicago for visits with his American relatives. Dad attended Mount Carmel School and St. Joseph’s High School. Over the years he obtained his private pilot license, worked in mining at Great Bear Lake, was certified with the Canadian Ski Instructors Alliance Level IV while teaching skiing at Mount Snow, Vermont and Banff (where he met and married his wife, Helen). They settled back in Edmonton, and while raising a family, Dad put his creative energies into house and patio renovations, various wood working projects and gardening. Devoted to his family and loyal in friendship, Dad opened his home to all. In the spirit of his hospitality, and in remembrance of Ron, we invite family, friends and acquaintances to join us at his home for light refreshments and sharing of memories on Saturday, June 18, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. No flowers please. Cremation has taken place.
