Sophie Krawchuk Obituary

It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Baba, Sophie Krawchuk (nee Kashuba), at the golden age of 99 years old. She passed away peacefully at the University of Alberta Hospital, at approximately 9:15 a.m. on July 25, 2017. Baba had remained living in her home of over 65 years until the month prior and was in strong health and sharp as a tack. She loved life to the fullest and will be a role model of morality, vibrancy, love and kindness for us all forever. Sophie was born January 24,,1918 at Smoky Lake, Alberta, the fourteenth child of Nykola and Warwara Kashuba, who had emigrated from the Ukraine. She met John Krawchuk at her cousin’s wedding and it was love at first sight! One day, months later, John arrived on a white horse and joined Sophie and the girls on the Democrat and off they went to the dance. That evening John and Sophie, hand in hand, walked along the apple trees, and as Baba told me and her great-grandson just two and a half weeks ago, John proposed to her under the apple tree. They married in 1943 on November 13 in Chipman, Alberta. On March 4, 1946, baby Gloria arrived. At that time the couple lived on the farm in Smoky Lake. In 1948 they moved to Beverly, Alberta, and then son Ray arrived on June 26, 1949. The family lived and loved in their home at 12219 - 48 street where they remained until their deaths. In 1955 Sophie began her career as sous-chef at the famous Steak Loft in Edmonton where she worked for the next 27 years. Sophie enjoyed gardening, cooking, going to the lake in the trailer, and having many gatherings with family and friends at her home. She had great style and was always beautiful. She loved her two children deeply, and was heartbroken by their too early passing, Ray in 2006, and Gloria in 2007. John and Sophie were strong for each other and put all their love into their grandchildren, Michelle and Shane Stevenson, Shane’s wife Tania and their cherished great-grandchildren, Dylan, Tristan, James, Brett and Adele. We loved our Baba and Gido with all our hearts and hope they are together now with their beloved Gloria and Ray, we will miss them forever. Prayer Service Sunday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Barbara Russian Orthodox Cathedral, 10105 – 96 Street, Edmonton. Funeral Service Monday, July 31 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Barbara Russian Orthodox Cathedral with interment in Evergreen Memorial Gardens at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to St. Barbara Russian Orthodox Cathedral, 10105 – 96 Street, Edmonton, AB T5H 2G3.
